Exxaro Grootegeluk Primary Sediment Management Facilty
As part of Exxaro Coal (Pty) Ltd’s Grootegeluk Integrated Water Management Strategy, this turnkey project delivered a new Primary Sediment Management Facility (PSMF) and supporting infrastructure. The works included extensive civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical construction — from clarifiers and pump stations to bridges and pipelines. Repairs and upgrades to the Olifantskop conveyance channel further enhanced system integration. The project was completed with zero Lost Time Injuries (LTIs), reflecting our unwavering commitment to safety and quality. The result is a fully integrated water treatment and conveyance system that boosts operational efficiency, water recovery, and environmental compliance.

Sappi Ngodwana Mill - Electrostatic Precipitator Upgrade (P3 & P4)
As part of Sappi Ngodwana Mill’s carbon reduction upgrade, this project involved the mechanical installation of two large electrostatic precipitators (P3 & P4). Over five months, the units were pre-assembled and commissioned in twelve sections to ensure seamless installation during the mill shutdown. The team dismantled 380,000 kg of existing steelwork and installed 530,000 kg of preassembled units using a 750-ton crane. Working 24 hours a day for 23 days, the team executed a complex installation with precision and efficiency. The upgraded systems now operate beyond design expectations, showcasing exceptional planning, technical skill, and quality execution.

Sappi Ngodwana Mill - Liner Kraft Board Machine Upgrade
As part of Sappi Ngodwana Mill’s major production upgrade, this project involved the extensive mechanical installation and refurbishment of the Liner Kraft Board paper machine. Planned over 12 months with more than 4,000 defined tasks, the 42-day shutdown mobilized over 200 personnel across three shifts. The project, recognized by the OEM as one of the largest paper machine refurbishments ever completed globally, demanded exceptional precision in critical sections. Key works included new headboxes, press section rebuilds, vacuum box replacements, and dryer section modifications. Completed safely, on schedule, and to OEM tolerances, the project set a new benchmark for technical excellence and execution.

Seriti - New Vaal Colliery - Stockyard Management Project
Amtec was appointed to load and haul coal from the Ramp 14 strategic stockpile to the crushing and screening stockyard, supporting Seriti’s production catch-up plan. Over a 15-month period, the team successfully moved 4,2 million tons of coal. The project team ensured optimal machine availability, safe operations, and consistent performance throughout the project.

Seriti New Denmark North Incline BMH Civil & Structural Works
Seriti’s New Denmark colliery shaft upgrade project was a strategic initiative undertaken as part of the New Denmark life of mine and the ongoing coal supply agreement to Eskom’s Tutuka power station. The scope encompassed both Greenfield and Brownfield activities, including underground (UG) and surface works, civil engineering, and SMPP (Structural, Mechanical, Piping, and Platework). Major components of the project included the extension of the North main conveyor by 500 metres, installation of a 1.2km underground inclined belt at 14 degrees feeding into a 6KT silo, as well as two feeders and an accelerator belt beneath the silo. Additionally, AMTEC constructed a 6km overland belt to channel material to a 12KT silo. The project was completed in 24 months, with a strong commitment to safety, highlighted by the achievement of zero LTI free hours.

Exxaro Matla Mine 2 NWA construction of underground conveyor infrastructure
As part of the Matla Mine 2 Northwest Access Project, AMTEC was selected to execute the complete construction and commissioning of the TC01 decline conveyor and its associated services. This installation constitutes a critical connection between underground mining levels, facilitating the efficient transfer of run-of-mine coal from the 4 Seam conveyor to the pre-existing 2 Seam system. Our scope encompassed full conveyor assembly and integration of essential water services.

The TC01 decline conveyor is engineered to perform in challenging underground conditions, and all aspects were constructed in adherence to project specifications and Matla’s operational requirements. Portable water for suppression is drawn from an established surface reservoir and supplied underground via a shared distribution line servicing both potable water stations and the fire hydrant network.

The successful delivery of this project demonstrates our proficiency in managing complex underground construction within a live mining environment. By maintaining rigorous project management standards, prioritising safety compliance, and fostering effective collaboration between ourselves and our client, we have provided Matla Mine 2 with a robust conveyor system supported by comprehensive safety and water management infrastructure. The completed installation enhances material flow efficiency, strengthens operational safety, and supports long-term client productivity by adding 15 to 20 years onto the planned life of mine.

Glencore Tweefontein Rail Load Out
The Glencore Tweefontein life of mine and underground coal reclamation project encompassed a turnkey SMPP (Structural, Mechanical, Piping, and Platework) development. The main scope included the fabrication and construction of a Rapid Rail Load Out bin, which allowed for loading a full train of 100 wagons—approximately 700 tons in under two hours. Additionally, the project involved constructing two material stackers, each with a capacity of around 400 tons. This initiative was designed to optimise coal handling and streamline logistics for coal transport, contributing to the overall efficiency and productivity of the mining operation.

BHP Middelburg Water plant mechanicals
This construction project involved the installation and commissioning of extensive HDPE piping and mechanical infrastructure across a large industrial plant environment. The scope included the fabrication and installation of more than 12 kilometres of in-plant HDPE piping, and 5 kilometres of overland HDPE piping. Pipe diameters ranged from 25mm to 630mm, requiring specialized handling and welding capacity supported by 7 HDPE welding units.

The project also included significant structural works, such as fabrication of 25 tonnes of pipe supports, and the installation of more than 150 mechanical components and assemblies. Major infrastructure elements included the erection of two 375-ton limestone storage silos.

To manage the complexity and multiple work fronts, a full construction management team was deployed, with responsibilities divided across six area supervisors. Workforce levels peaked at 80+ personnel on site, ensuring efficient progress and adherence to schedule.

Seriti Kriel Block F Underground Incline belt, Civils and SMPP
Seriti’s Kriel Block F project was undertaken as part of the life of mine initiative and involved the development of a new decline shaft and in so doing, extending the mine’s supply of around 4 MTPA of thermal coal directly to Eskom’s Kriel power station to 2035 The project encompassed a turnkey approach, including civil works and SMPP activities. The scope included the construction of a 600m incline belt with a 200m stockpile belt. the installation of the F2 belt which ran 2km underground as well as the fabrication and construction—including civil works—of the main silo feed belt, which extended approximately 500 meters. In addition to this AMTEC was also tasked to construct shaft canopies at all the shaft entrances on this project. This included civil works as well as structural work.

Sierre Leone Gangama Structural, Mechanical and Piping project
The Sierra Rutile Gangama Plant Project marked a significant milestone as AMTEC’s largest offshore project to date. As part of Sierra Rutile’s initiative to extend the life of their mine, the project involved the construction of a 500-ton-per-hour plant. The turnkey SMPP (Structural, Mechanical, Platework, and Piping) scope included the design and fabrication of all materials in South Africa, which were then shipped to Sierra Leone. Once in Sierra Leone, the materials were loaded onto a barge and transported via a local canal to the mine’s off-loading area, where a stiff leg crane facilitated unloading. The project scope covered the development of the front end, construction of a spiral plant, the construction of an 800-metre overland conveyor and involved over 3 kilometres of in-plant HDPE piping. In total, approximately 850 tons of equipment and around 350 shipping containers were managed and delivered to site for this major undertaking. The efficient coordination ensured that all required resources arrived on site, enabling the completion of the project regardless of geographical constraints. This achievement highlights AMTEC’s capacity to deliver complex projects anywhere on the continent.
